Which Way Should Construction Fence Gates Swing in NYC?

Small detail, big safety issue.

In NYC, construction fence gates should not swing outward into the sidewalk, bike lane, roadway, or other public area.

Under NYC Building Code §3307.7.2, gates must either be sliding gates or swing into an area not accessible to the public.

So, if you’re standing on the sidewalk facing the gate, it should typically push inward toward the construction site.

If there isn’t enough room for an inward swing, a sliding gate may be the better option.

On Site Safety Plans and logistics plans, the gate swing should be clearly shown so it does not conflict with pedestrian or traffic circulation.

Simple detail. Important coordination.
