On NYC construction sites, sidewalk sheds are primarily installed to protect pedestrians and the public from hazards associated with construction or demolition work.
But can the top of a sidewalk shed also be used to store construction materials?
Sometimes, but not automatically.
The Sidewalk Shed Must Be Designed for Storage
Under the NYC Building Code, materials or other items should not simply be placed on top of a sidewalk shed because space is available.
If materials are going to be stored or placed on the shed, the shed must be specifically designed to accommodate those loads, and the permitted storage areas must be identified on the sidewalk shed drawings. (New York City Government)
This is an important distinction when coordinating site logistics.
A sidewalk shed designed only for pedestrian protection should not be assumed to function as a material platform.
Light-Duty vs. Heavy Duty Sidewalk Sheds
NYC Building Code §3307.6.4.2 establishes design load requirements for sidewalk sheds.
A heavy duty sidewalk shed is designed for a live load of at least 300 pounds per square foot (psf).
For certain work occurring below 100 feet, a light duty sidewalk shed may be designed for a minimum live load of 150 psf provided that no materials or other items are stored or placed on the shed. (New York City Government)
That means a light duty shed should not be treated as available storage space.
What About a Heavy Duty Shed?
Even with a heavy duty shed, storage is not automatic.
NYC Building Code §3307.6.4.2.2 requires the shed to be designed for the proposed storage, with the storage or placement areas clearly shown on the drawings. The additional weight of the proposed materials must also be accounted for in the design where required. (New York City Government)
The code also requires materials placed on an approved shed to remain within the designated storage areas and to be secured against dislodgement or wind displacement. Loads must be distributed so that the shed’s design limits are not exceeded. See BC §3307.6.5.4. (New York City Government)
Why This Matters During Logistics Planning
This is where early coordination becomes important.
If a project anticipates using the sidewalk shed for materials, equipment, scaffold reactions, or other loads, that use should be discussed with the sidewalk shed designer before construction logistics are finalized.
The Site Safety Plan or logistics drawings should also remain coordinated with the engineered sidewalk shed drawings.
A small note such as “material storage on sidewalk shed” can represent a significant structural loading condition.

Do not assume the top of a sidewalk shed is usable storage space.
Before showing or allowing materials on a sidewalk shed:
- Confirm that storage is permitted by the sidewalk shed design.
- Verify the designated storage area.
- Coordinate the condition between the sidewalk shed drawings and the project’s construction logistics plans.
Good construction logistics isn’t only about finding available space.
It’s about making sure the space is actually designed to be used that way.
